Alan Peckolick: The Writing on the Wall

We are pleased to present a collection of paintings by internationally renowned American graphic designer Alan Peckolick (19 October - 9 November).

Alan draws upon his long experience and deep understanding of typography and letter forms to create paintings of urban buildings, their fading signs and peeling paint carrying deeper messages of a world where such imagery plays a powerful and influential role in all our lives.

Typography reflects for Peckolick the human involvement in what he portrays. Of the writing in his painting Zipper Factory, which he sees as the closest thing to pure wall typography, he says: "It is the naïve art of crafts people who painted a sign and did not realise that they were creating an aesthetic".

Along with Herb Lubalin, one of America’s foremost graphic designers renowned for his belief in conceptual design, Alan founded the highly successful design group Lubalin Peckolick in 1980, and went on to compile and design the book Herb Lubalin – Art Director, Graphic Designer and Typographer as a tribute to his mentor, colleague and friend who died in 1981.

His love of graphics and the graphic form underpins much of his work and he draws his inspiration from signage and lettering from around the world.

Please see Alan's page in the 'Artists' section to view more of his works.
