Ana Bianchi: Flatlands Revisited

Ana Bianchi studied fine art at Chelsea, the Byam Shaw and Central St Martinís in London. A painter, sculptor and installation artist, she has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe.

For this, her third solo show, Ana has created a group of paintings which retain the haunting, ambiguous qualities that have always characterised her sweeping, spacial landscapes.

Her chosen palette of muted blues, greys and ochres enhances an all-pervading sense of loss as we find ourselves searching for some reassuring evidence of a human presence in these vast landscapes, some sign of labour, some trace of domesticity. Occasionally a hint is offered; a wisp of smoke, a washing line - never quite conclusive, always elusive.

Some images appear to be trace memories of places visited; others seem to offer a bleak vision of the future.

Edward Hopper-like in their absence of detail, they speak of isolation and tell of no past, present or future. The lack of narrative in these panoramic paintings, their still and timeless quality, result in images that are both romantic and apocalyptic.
